For the past decade or so, I rediscovered oil and have not looked backed. My subject matter focuses on objects of nostalgia. My parents both came from San Marino, Italy and you can imagine food was a big part of my upbringing. I enjoyed the culture of my heritage but my ambition as a youth was to discover America and all its charm. Memories of a typical American breakfast or dinner as a kid, going to little diners with my Dad and helping my little Italian Grandmother in the kitchen are things that are in my thoughts when I paint my still life's. Whether its vintage cars, old toasters or retro food packaging art, these are thoughts and images that play a strong influence in my art. It seems that if it is retro more than likely I will put it on canvas.

Their works on paper will be a great addition and look for the November Show.

Eye On Art Gallery will feature several artists working in the area of handmade journals and books for the November Gallery Walk. The artists have a common tie to Ball State University and include professors in the English and Art Department as well as students and graduates.

Rai Peterson, Associate Professor of English at Ball State University. She has studied many small-press publishers and little magazines during the period, both their literary output and printing and binding methods. Recently, she has been exploring the use of vintage maps in the binding of travel journals. Laura Kuhlman, graduate of Ball State University, is currently a graduate student at the University of Iowa, where she is studying literature and is simultaneously a student at the Center for the Book. Laura makes intricate case-bound books from delicate papers with open spines. Karen Ruling, graduate of the English Department at Ball State University. Karen is the daughter of a costume designer, and her work shows unusual sartorial flair, both in choice of leathers and fabrics and elaborate closure systems using buttons and buckles. Maddy Witek, graduate of English and commercial printing departments at Ball State University. Her work concentrates on classically-bound case-books made with high-grade drawing papers and decorated paper-covered bindings. Additional works will be exhibited by David and Sarojni Johnson.

I am adding 3 works by Wisconsin artist, Pamela Murphy. I first saw her work at Fine Line Gallery in Door County and was so impressed with the imagery and technique of her work. In her words, "I collect old photographs and choose figures from them for my paintings. The people whose lives are recorded in those pictures are strangers, yet they are familiar to all of us. They remind us of ourselves, our families, and our issues on both personal and cultural levels."

"The figures in my paintings are presented on a surface that is rich and textured. Many layers of paint reveal the history of the canvas and create a space that serves to isolate the form of each figure. My subjects have been disconnected from their original context and are recreated as icons for the viewer’s personal connection. Each viewer brings with them their own specific history, so a single image can mean different things to different people. The figures in my paintings exist in situations—or as objects—in which I hope the viewer will find a little of themselves."

This Beautiful piece of Americana is truly an outstanding siren landscape of the Glacier National Forest. Heinze painted what is possibly the Lewis Mountain Range and the Lower Saint Marys Lake. Not confirmed of the location within the park.

Karl Buehr and also was a student of William Merritt Chase.
His Artwork caught the attention of then, President Of the Great Northern Railway. In 1928, Louise W. Hill was in need of some Illustration advertisement work. So he Instructed Adolph Heinze to capture the beauty of the Northwest.

Heinze was a member of the All-Illinois Fine Artists Association in Chicago.He painted in Canada's Waterton Lake,the Grand Tetons and many other National Parks in the West.

I had an opportunity to see two of Sam's cows purchased by good friends and big fans of the gallery. The two paintings were above the bed with a dark wall, good lighting and looked like they were commissioned for the space. It is always refreshing to see an art patron invest in something they love to see everyday.

Eye On Art is sponsoring a Plein Air Painting Workshop for the Debra Huse. Debra is a fantastic painter and teacher. The workshop will be in the Carmel, IN area and our base will be the Eye On Art Gallery on Main Street in Carmel. The three day workshop will be September 6-8. I am limiting the workshop to 15 artists and we already have seven that heard about it early and have signed up. So, don't delay too long. My attempt each year is to bring in a national painter to this area, giving our regional artists an opportunity to participate and save on expenses of flying to other sites.

The fee is $350 and includes a breakfast at the gallery. Workshop hours are 9am to 4pm with a lunch break. We will also being showing Debra's paintings in the gallery and an opening reception for Debra during our Second Saturday Gallery Walk, September 10.

Rob Day's portrait and illustration work has a following of publishers and art directors throughout the country. His oil portraits have been published in many of the nation's top magazines including Time, Sports Illustrated, Business Week, Esquire, GQ and Smithsonian magazine. Rolling Stone magazine recognized Rob's work in the book, "The Illustrated Portraits, the best portraits in the history of Rolling Stone magazine." A graduate of Herron School of Art & Design, Day was one of four artists featured in the exhibit "Illustrious Herron Illustrators", an exhibit showcasing the most accomplished illustrators in the history of Herron School of Art. Larkin is a Professor of Art at Indiana University South Bend and received his MFA in printmaking from the Pennsylvania State University in 1977. He has been teaching drawing and printmaking for the last 33 years. He has won numerous prizes in regional and national competitions for his artwork including Best of Show award at the 75th Annual Hoosier Salon Exhibit in Indianapolis. His works are in numerous private collections including the corporate collections of Pillsbury, NIPSCO, and Lincoln Life Insurance Companies.

The idea of vessel or containment is a dominant concept in my work. While “trained as a functional potter,” I have experimented with many facets of clay and a wide range of firing techniques, however, I have always felt a certain obligation to the utility of a vessel.

I am so pleased to add the dynamic, screen prints from Laurie Wright. Laurie has developed a great sense of design and color in her art. In Laurie's words, "I feel that most colors complement in one way or another so I have been able to leave many of my concerns about color behavior behind. I think in bright and saturated primary colors and I like to combine them with their complements. By hiding elements in the color, I reward the careful and intent viewer for his attention."

Craig is from Northeast Wisconsin, paints what he sees and in his own words...."I often choose the cow as a vessel for expression. As a ubiquitous creature of this landscape, the cow continually provides me with visual prompting. I am drawn to the animal's geometry, it's angular anatomy and it's close cut coat which reveals this form."

Two of Kenneth Baskin's works will be displayed in the Grand Opening, November 6 for Eye On Art Gallery.

In November of 2009, Baskin’s 20th Century Artifacts were featured on the cover of Ceramics Monthly magazine. Baskin serves as a professor of ceramics at McNeese State University in Louisiana, and holds an M.F.A. in ceramics from the University of South Carolina. He is a recipient of the National Council on Education in the Ceramic Arts Emerging Artist Award, and has recently returned from a solo exhibition and artist-in-residency at the Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taipei, Taiwan. He has worked, exhibited, and been collected nationally and internationally.

Classes at Eye On Art Gallery

I thought it would be nice to see one of Harry Gold's sculptures in creative development. The drawing to the left shows the conceptual creation of the work and the base tricycle is to the right. Harry is a patina specialist and it will be interesting to see how the elements of the sculpture come together and see the final patina. Love his work...and ya gotta love his amazing ability. Three works coming to EYE ON ART Gallery. I can't say enough, but he can. His artist's statement: I want to make the best artwork that my abilities will allow.

I don't really like the title "artist" due to the fact that everything can be considered art (if it needs a whole lot of talk...it probably needs a little more work). I guess this would be my painter-drawer-occasional sculptor-statement. I work within a self-imposed set of parameters with respect to craftsmanship, chemistry, and my interpretation of aesthetic beauty. Lame? Yeah, I think it's the use of the word "beauty".

I don't really have much of a religious, political, social or moral agenda ( there's a whole "gang o' folks" who have that covered). Also, I change my mind too much to stick with any one philosophy.

I mostly paint about my life and my silly little observations.

So... I guess I just want to make the best work that my abilities will allow.

I first saw Craig's paintings at a gallery in Saugatuck this Summer and recognized his skills as a painter and draftsman. When the plans for EYE ON ART Gallery became a reality, he was one of the first artists to contact on my list. I met him at the Fort Wayne Museum last night to see his two works in the Contemporary Realism Biennial. He stopped to see the gallery today on his long trip back to Wisconsin. I am happy to announce that Craig will have 3 paintings and drawings in the gallery by the November 6 gallery walk and grand opening.
